Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition marked by impulsiveness, inability to concentrate, inattention, distractibility and hyperactivity. It is usually diagnosed in children, many of whom are so disruptive that normal play and schooling is impossible for them. Extensive brain research has shown clearly that children with this disorder have an underlying neurological dysfunction that is correlated with their behaviour. Drugs have been used to treat this condition in the past but there are ways other than drugging children that can help. This condition is also present in adults.

Electrodes are placed on the scalp and the brainwave activity is recorded and processed by computer. Information about certain brainwave frequencies are shown back to the person, who attempts to change the activity level by utilising operant conditioning. The presentation is usually in the form of a video game and the person is effectively playing the video game with his or her brain. Eventually the brainwave activity is "shaped" towards a more desirable, more regulated performance. The frequencies and locations are specific to the treated condition and to the individual.
