What is PTSD (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder) ?
|
|
|
PTSD is a condition or disorder that usually happens
following a traumatic event including experiencing,
witnessing or confronting actual or threatening death, or
injury, or a threat to the physical integrity of oneself
or others, with an immediate reaction of intense fear,
helplessness, or horror. A person with PTSD persistently
re-experiences the traumatic event, avoids the stimuli
associated with the trauma, with numbing of general
responsiveness and increasing arousal. Re-experiencing
the trauma usually includes recurrent intrusive and
distressing recollections of the event including
flashbacks and nightmares, distressing dreams, intensive
psychological distress or physiological reactivity if
exposed to internal or external cues that symbolise or
resemble some parts of the traumatic event. A traumatised
person with PTSD tries to avoid thoughts and/or feelings
associated with the event or anything associated with it
and may have amnesia (loss of memory) for an important
aspect of trauma (event). The person may lose interest in
social life or significant activities, feel
detached/estranged from others. One may have difficulty
falling or staying asleep, be irritable or even have
outbursts of anger, have exaggerated startle response and
experience problems concentrating. PTSD may impair one's
biological, psychological and social aspects of life. |

What is biofeedback ?
|
|
|
Biofeedback is a widely used method for teaching voluntary
control of various physiological functions by providing
instantaneous information about variations in
physiological activity such as blood pressure, heart rate
variability, brain waves, temperature, muscle tension,
etc). This method is so efficient and powerful that it was
widely used in training cosmonauts and astronauts. It is
used in non-invasive treatments of various psychological
and physiological problems. The method is very efficient
and can be learned in very little time, which is the main
advantage over the main stream methods (psychotherapy,
counselling, etc) |

|
How will I know if the therapy has worked ?
|
|
|
Our treatment will help you to regain your composure in
little time, you will feel the change in your
physiological functioning (e.g. heart rate, breathing,
etc). Your mind will "follow" these changes and you will
feel calmer and more focused. Also, your brain processing
power (hence your performance) will increase due to
decreased worrying (the part of your mind occupied by
worrying thoughts and feelings will be available for doing
something more useful). Finally, our modern computerised
technology enables you to see in "real time" the immediate
improvement you will achieve with our treatment. |
